An end in itself.įrom ‘Love in the Time of Cholera’. Think of love as a state of grace, not the means to anything, but the alpha and omega. Our inner lives are eternal, which is to say that our spirits remain as youthful and vigorous as when we were in full bloom. The essence of a human being is resistant to the passage of time. A fine place to start before diving into her more intense works, "Practical Mysticism" has captivated generations of readers, and is still the premier text for the introductory study of mysticism. She was the first woman to address the clergy of the Church of England. Educated at King’s College for Women, London, Underhill was Upton Lecturer on the Philosophy of Religion at Manchester College, University of Oxford. Augustine, and Thomas a Kempis, and examples from these writers, as well as poets like Keats and Whitman, are sprinkled throughout the book. Evelyn Underhill (1875-1941) was an English poet, novelist, and writer on mysticism. Underhill was greatly influenced by mystics such as St. She invites the reader to become involved in mysticism, giving simple examples of how it is relevant to everyday people. Topics are addressed broadly, and Chapter 1, "What is Mysticism?" is an enlightening place for those unfamiliar with the topic to begin. It is written, to some extent, with non-Christians in mind, so Underhill is at her simplest here, yet her language is still poetic and enjoyable to read. This shorter work, "Practical Mysticism", is an abridged version of Underhill's theology, and is a perfect starting point for immersion into the subject. Her book, "Mysticism: A Study in the Nature and Development of Spiritual Consciousness," is the authoritative text of modern mysticism. "Practical Mysticism is a work by one of the foremost 20th century Christian mystics, Evelyn Underhill. Exact facsimile of the original edition, not reproduced with Optical Recognition Software. Identity capital is the collection of skills, relationships, and professional resources we build up over our lives. I'll not give any of the story away but I do recommend this book to anyone who likes sci/fi, erotic romance,(mildly) and alien encounters of the sexy adventurous kind. This story was so touching that I even cried at a couple parts. to see if she has written anything else like this, to no avail. I keep hunting Amazons profile page of L.C. First of all I love this genre (alien ,who is not human looking meets human woman and has attraction immediately on both sides.)Just love it. ago He's a bit extreme (MMC), but not to the point I can't read him. Very well done and not just Mars needs women. This is one of those books I read more than once. The MMC and the FMC are involved in a political situation than ends up with the two of them stranded together on an uninhabited planet having to figure each other out. Review 2: I have to tell you that I read maybe one book out of ,say, 150 books mor. I think that's the sign of a talented writer, to be able to show how feelings grow over time. I like that the alien is actually 'Alien' and not just a bigger version of a human male.I also like that the romance is slow to develop and is hampered by cultural differences. Actually I just wish this author would write more! The cover art is such a turn off, don't let it sway you from a sci-fi tale that is different from most. Buy a cheap copy of Starkissed book by Lanette Curington. Wish it could be made into an audio book as I like to listen to my favourite books a year or so later while I am out and about. Review 1: I read this a while ago, but still go back and read parts of it again when I am in between books. The book’s main focus in on the females of the family and the story unfolds from their viewpoint, alternating between the mother and her daughters.Īs Bright As Heaven gives us a detailed look at the 1918 pandemic, and there were certainly many aspects that reminded me of what we are experiencing today with Covid. The Bright family were however strongly impacted by events and choices made during that time. The story is divided into halves, the first part is about how the family and the city of Philadelphia deals with the pandemic, while the second half shows what life became after the end of the war and the flu. This was a difficult time as the Great War in Europe was escalating and then as the family settles into their new home and business, their lives were about to be torn apart by the devastating epidemic that struck with deadly intent. The whole family, wife Pauline, and daughters Evelyn, Maggie and Willa are grieving the death of 4 month old Henry, who was born with a defective heart. The main characters are from the Bright family that moves to Philadelphia so that the father, Thomas, can join his uncle in his mortuary business.
